“Among Moscow collectors, I have got a rather unflattering nickname: the eccentric Greek ”who buys useless garbage.” (from the memoirs of George Costakis).

George Costakis was born on July 5 1913 into a Greek family - his father Dionisios was a native of Zante, whereas his mother, Elena Sarris-Papachristodoulou came from an impoverished aristocratic family and had roots from both Samos and Lesbos. George Costakis had two important biographical moments associated with Greece: he kept a Greek citizenship all his life and lived in Athens for the last ten years of his life, until his death in 1990. Thats about  where Costakis’ “greekness” ends.

The Russian element is much more important - Costakis spoke and thought in Russian, he was married to a Russian, he raised his four children as Russians, he sincerely loved Russia and treated the West with the characteristic Russian “love and  hate” attitude. Finally, Costakis devoted his life to Russian culture, acquiring completely unique collections, that of the Russian avant-garde, Russian icons, Russian folk toys and once more, that of Russian non-conformist artists.

Костаки  родился в 1913 году в семье греков – выходца с острова Закинф Дионисия Спиридоновича и Елены Эммануиловны, происходившей из обедневших греческих аристократов. С Грецией у Георгия Костаки связаны еще два биографических момента: он всю жизнь сохранял греческий паспорт и последние десять лет до своей кончины в 1990-м прожил в Афинах.  

Намного важнее русская составляющая - Костаки говорил и думал по-русски, он был женат на русской, он вырастил и воспитал своих четырех детей как русских, он искренне любил Россию. Наконец, Костаки посвятил свою жизнь русской культуре, собрав уникальные коллекции – русский авангард, древнерусское искусство, народные игрушки и произведения художников-нонконформистов.

The famous American art critic, art dealer and the first director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA) has visited Moscow at least twice in search of new art. The first time this happened in the winter of 1928, when the newly appointed head of the MOMA arrived in the Russian capital to study and acquire avant-garde works.

Barr's second  visit to Moscow took place in 1957 with Rene D’ Arnoncourt, the newly appointed director of MOMA. The purpose of their trip was directly related to Costakis’ unique collection, which by then had already acquired a worldwide fame. George Costakis warmly received the Americans at the apartment on Leninsky prospekt, showed his collection and also demonstrated the works of Anatoly Zverev. As a result, Alfred Barr acquired several first-class Zverev gouaches (mostly portraits) for the New York collection, which he immediately placed in the museum exposition - they marked a new milestone in Russian art.
Costakis warm, friendly relations and correspondence with Barr continued until the latter's death in 1981.

Знаменитый американский искусствовед, арт-дилер и первый директор Музея современного искусства в Нью-Йорке (МОМА), как минимум, дважды бывал в Москве в поисках нового искусства. Первый раз это случилось зимой 1928 года, когда только что назначенный глава МОМА прибыл в российскую столицу для изучения и приобретения авангардных работ. 

Другой визит Барра в Москву состоялся в 1957 году в компании с Рене Д’Арнонкуром, новым директором МОМА. Цель их поездки была напрямую связана с уникальной коллекцией Костаки, которой уже гремела всемирная слава. Георгий Костаки тепло принял американцев в квартире на Ленинском проспекте, показал свое собрание и продемонстрировал также работы Анатолия Зверева. В итоге Альфред Барр приобрел для нью-йоркской коллекции несколько первоклассных зверевских гуашей (по большей части портреты), которые сразу разместил в музейной экспозиции – они обозначали новую веху в русском искусстве.. 
Теплые, дружеские  отношения и переписка Костаки с Барром продолжалась вплоть до кончины последнего в 1981 году.

The expression “a Genius of a Collector” may seem unexpected and even self-contradicting. It's one thing to be a brilliant artist or writer, that is, a person who creates something, whereas a collector merely uses the artist’s works: he collects ready-made artefacts.




The entire history of the twentieth century art proves that this is a misconception. A collector is much more than a possessor. The collector George Costakis combined several roles at once: that of a historian, a curator, a visionary, a promoter, an educator ... He was a full-fledged creator, thanks to whom several world class museums are flourishing today. He was an innovator: his unique gift of discovering new phenomena in art went against the generally accepted tastes and standards.

George Costakis is often compared to the great Russian collectors Pavel Tretyakov, Sergei Shchukin or Savva Morozov. This comparison is justified. But with two important reservations: unlike the pre-revolutionary patrons of the arts, Costakis did not have a million dollar fortune, his collection was formed in an atmosphere of rejection and even condemnation from the state. At any moment, his activities could be regarded as anti-Soviet. But this is the power of genius - he acts outside the box: that of framework and dogma. In other words, the Costakis Collector was, definitely, a genius.

Выражение «гениальный коллекционер» может показаться неожиданным, парадоксальным. Одно дело – гениальный художник или писатель, то есть человек, создающий нечто новое. Коллекционер лишь пользуется их трудами: он собирает готовые артефакты. 

Вся история ХХ века опровергает этот односторонний взгляд. Коллекционер – нечто большее, чем собственник. Так, Георгий Костаки совместил сразу несколько амплуа – историк, хранитель, куратор, продюсер, просветитель… Он был полноценным творцом, благодаря которому сегодня процветают сразу несколько мировых музеев. Он был новатором: его уникальный дар открывать новые явления в искусстве шел вразрез с общепринятыми вкусами и стандартами. 

Георгия Костаки нередко сравнивают с великими русскими коллекционерами Павлом Третьяковым, Сергеем Щукиным или Саввой Морозовым. Сравнение это оправдано. Но с двумя важными оговорками: в отличие от дореволюционных меценатов, Костаки не обладал миллионным состоянием, его коллекция складывалась в атмосфере неприятия и даже осуждения со стороны государства. В любой момент его деятельность могла быть расценена как антисоветская. Но в этом и состоит сила гения -  он действует вне рамок и канонов. Иными словами, Костаки-коллекционер был, конечно, гениален.

*“Moscow: duality, complexity, the highest degree of mobility, collision and confusion of individual elements of the exterior ... I consider this external and internal Moscow to be the starting point of my searches. Moscow is my pictorial tuning fork."* - **Wassily Kandinsky**. 

One of the most famous works by Wassily Kandinsky, one of the masterpieces of the Costakis Collection - “The Red Square" (1916) - was acquired by Costakis from the family of Vasiliy Bobrov, assistant and personal secretary of the great artist. The collector considered it important to leave the painting in Russia; and now the canvas is part of the permanent exposition of the Tretyakov Gallery.

In his memoirs, George Costakis described in detail how the “search for Kandinsky” took place: fate brought him to people who were able to help him acquire very rare and important  drawings of the master. He made a mistake only once: he trusted Nina Kandinskaya, the artist's wife, who lived in Paris. He helped her get in touch with her sister and mother who remained in Moscow. Consequently, when in Moscow, Nina Kandinskaya took all the great artist’s works from her mother’s house and moved them to France.
It must be noted that Costakis never chased the "big names". However, he considered the rare works of the first abstractionist, created before Kandinsky’s final departure from Russia in 1922, to be true masterpieces.

Одна из самых известных работ Василия Кандинского, шедевр из коллекции Костаки -  «Красная площадь» 1916 года – была приобретена Георгием Дионисовичем в семье Боброва, ассистента и личного секретаря великого художника. Коллекционер посчитал важным оставить ее в России; и теперь полотно хранится в Третьяковской галерее.


В своих воспоминаниях Георгий Костаки подробно описывает, как происходили «поиски Кандинского»: судьба сводила его именно с теми людьми, которые помогали приобрести очень редкие рисунки мастера. Лишь однажды он совершил осечку: доверился Нине Кандинской, жене художника, которая жила в Париже. Он помог ей связаться с сестрой и матерью, жившими в Москве. В итоге, приехав в Россию, Нина Кандинская увезла на Запад все, что смогла обнаружить в доме матери. 
Нужно сказать, Костаки никогда не гнался за «громкими именами». Однако редкие вещи первого абстракциониста, созданные до его окончательного отъезда из России в 1922 году, считал истинными сокровищами.

The AZ Museum presents a new project dedicated to George Costakis, creator of a unique collection of the First Russian Avant-garde and non-conformist artists. The biographical part of the project will show more than a hundred photographs and documents, as well as the film "Costaki's Gift", in which his daughter Aliki, artists A. Brusilovsky, O. Tselkov, I. Shelkovsky, art critics and museum curators will talk about the collector. They will reminisce and unravel various versions of the twists and turns of life and fate of Costakis, and from the fragmentary reflections of the facets of his difficult, and sometimes mysterious personality in the eyes of his contemporaries, a portrait of a man who saved and preserved the art of the Avant-garde, of which Russia is proud today, will be formed.

Costakis' Choice is not only about the "joy of the hunt" of a collector, precision of sight, fantastic intuition, but also about the ability to make decisions in the most difficult situations. When his life at home, in Moscow, became dangerous for his family and collection, and he was forced to emigrate, Costakis deliberately left the most valuable part of the collection to Russia - the Tretyakov Gallery, the Andrei Rublev Museum and to to the Ministry of Culture. In our project we will present the masterpieces of the First Avant-garde from the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery, works of  Russian icons  from the collection of  Andrei Rublev Museum, as well as the folk toy collection from the Tsaritsyno Museum. Platon Infante, contemporary star of the media art will analyse and present the mysteries of the First Russian Avant-garde, which glorified Russian art  around the world with the help of modern technologies.

The AZ Museum received more than six hundred works by Anatoly Zverev as a gift from the collector's daughter Aliki Kostaki. At the same time the museum's collection was replenished with works of  the representatives of the sixties avant garde wave, selected earlier by George Costakis. Thus part of the Costakis collection has actually become part of the AZ Museum and  will be presented  to the public in this  project.
George Costakis dreamed of opening a museum of contemporary art in Moscow which would have been based on his collection. His dream did not come true, the collection was divided, distributed among different museums. His generous gift to Russia was not appreciated for many years, and a hall named after him appeared in the Tretyakov Gallery only recently.

Around the three floors of our museum we would like to create a micro-model of the museum of contemporary art, which George Costakis has dreamed of, to show fragments of his outstanding and unique collection as an actual part of the culture of the  XXI century. We want to try to unravel the secret of the stunning energy and bewitching magic of the works of the Russian Avant-garde, as well as the secret of the personality of George Costakis himself, who certainly deserves our gratitude and respect, to try to comprehend the Secret of his Choice.

The New AZ Museum project is dedicated to Georg Costakis, the legendary collector (1913–1990), who collected and showed Russia and the rest of the world the works of representatives of the first Russian avant-garde.

<br>Музей АZ представляет новый проект, посвященный  Георгию Костаки, собравшему уникальную коллекцию Первого русского Авангарда и художников-нонконформистов. В биографической части проекта будет показано сто с лишним фотографий и документов, а также фильм "Дар Костаки", в котором о коллекционере расскажет его дочь Алики, художники А.Брусиловский, О. Целков, И. Шелковский, искусствоведы и сотрудники музеев. Они будут спорить друг с другом. выдвигать различные версии перипетий жизни и судьбы Костаки, и из фрагментарных отражений граней его непростой, а порой и загадочной личности в глазах современников сложится портрет человека, спасшего и сохранившего  искусство Авангарда, которым сегодня гордится Россия.


Выбор Костаки - это не только охотничий азарт коллекционера, точность взгляда, фантастическая интуиция, но и умение принять решение в самых непростых ситуациях. Когда его жизнь на родине, в Москве стала опасна для его семьи и коллекции, когда он вынужден был эмигрировать, ценнейшую часть коллекции он осознанно оставил России - Третьяковской галерее, музею имени Андрея Рублева. Министерству культуры. .И в нашем проекте мы представим шедевры Первого авангарда из коллекции Третьяковской галереи, произведения древнерусского искусства из собрания музея имени Андрея Рублева, народную игрушку из музея Царицыно. И медиа-арт сегодняшней звезды арт-сцены Платона Инфанте, осмысляющий и рассматривающий с помощью современных технологий смыслы и загадки прославившего Россию в мире Первого Русского Авангарда.

Музей AZ получил в подарок от дочери коллекционера Алики Костаки более шестисот работ Анатолия Зверева, а вскоре коллекция музея пополнилась работами художников-шестидесятников, отобранных в свое время Георгием Костаки. Так что часть коллекции Костаки сегодня находится в собрании музея АZ и  мы представим эти работы  публике в новом проекте.
Георгий Костаки мечтал, чтобы в Москве на основе его коллекции был открыт музей современного искусства. Его мечта не сбылась, коллекция была разделена, распределена между разными музеями.  Его щедрый дар России долгие годы не был по достоинству оценен, и зал его имени появился в Третьяковской галерее лишь недавно.

Мы хотим создать  на трех этажах нашего музея  микромодель музея современного искусства, о котором мечтал Георгий Костаки, показать фрагменты его выдающейся и уникальной коллекции, как актуальную часть культуры двадцать XXI века. Мы хотим попытаться разгадать тайну ошеломляющей энергии и завораживающей магии произведений Русского Авангарда, тайну личности самого Георгия Костаки, который безусловно заслуживает нашей благодарности и уважения, тайну его выбора.

Exhibition “Anatoly Zverev. On the threshold of a New Museum "

 In 2012, the Novy Manezh exhibition hosted the "Zverev on Fire" exhibition, organized by curator Polina Lobachevskaya and collector and philanthropist Natalia Opaleva. The exhibition became a sensation not only for the uniqueness of the material (miraculously preserved in a fire Zverev's works from the collection of George Costakis), but also for the level of display of 20th century art, which is destined to enter the 21st century with a new force .

Everyone who then created the exhibition, who collected the Zverev heritage scattered around the world as well as numerous visitors had no doubts: the Zverev Museum can and should culminate decades of his work and  the artists works should return to viewers (counting from the first exhibition in the Tretyakov Gallery in 1999, created under direct participation of Polina Lobachevskaya).

That is why the exhibition project “Anatoly Zverev. On the threshold of a New Museum ”is not just a“ statement of intent ”. This promise is fulfilled - showing what has been done and what is to be done in the months following the show. The exposition opens the museum laboratory, where discoveries  have already been made: from the design of the future halls of the AZ Museum (the design and construction of which is underway) to newly acquired works that are unknown even to specialists. Viewers will fully experience the scale of the ideas and (more importantly) the scale of the artist, who today is becoming more relevant than ever.

A separate hall, especially designed, will be devoted to the publishing work of the AZ Museum. We are talking about Here we will see unknown works of the artist, which have just been released. These are drawings for the classics (Gogol, Andersen, Apuleius) kept in archives, and the publication of Zverev's self-portraits, comparable in strength to the best self-portraits of Rembrandt or Van Gogh, as well as new  scientific research that will sheds new light on the artist's biography.

The significance and value of Anatoly Zverev's legacy will be revealed by a multimedia installation that will unite the entire space. It is designed to immerse one into  the artist 's world, to capture the seemingly accustomed viewer of the 21st century, to guide him through the variety of genres and forms of creativity of one of the geniuses of Russian art. For many, this exposition will come as a shock - you have never seen such a Zverev (very unusual and highly avant-garde).

 A real art sensation awaits visitors to the exhibition - an event that will become a landmark for the entire Russian culture of the 21st century. The exposition will include works by Anatoly Zverev from the collection of the great collector George Costakis. The thrill is that all these highly valuable and unique works (more than six hundred items in various genres and techniques), most of which are unknown to the general public, were donated to the AZ Museum by the daughter of Georgy Dionisovich Aliki Kostaki. She is happy to return this benchmark Zverev to his homeland in order to support the artist's museum.

  В  2012 году  в Новом Манеже  состоялась выставка «Зверев в огне», организованная куратором Полиной Лобачевской и коллекционером и  меценатом Наталией Опалевой. Выставка стала  сенсацией не только по уникальности материала (чудом сохранившиеся в пожаре листы Зверева из коллекции Георгия Костаки), но и по уровню показа искусства ХХ века, которому суждено войти в век XXI не пыльным (хоть и дорогим).

У всех, кто тогда создавал выставку, кто собирал  разбросанное по миру зверевское наследие  и  у многочисленных  посетителей не осталось сомнений : Музей Зверева может  и должен  увенчать  десятилетия трудов  по возвращению художника зрителям (если считать от первой выставки в Третьяковской галерее в 1999 году, созданной при непосредственном участии Полины Лобачевской).

Именно поэтому выставочный проект «Анатолий Зверев. На пороге нового музея»  - не просто «заявление о намерениях». Это выполненное обещание - показ того, что сделано и что предстоит сделать в считанные месяцы после выставки. Экспозиция открывает музейную лабораторию, где уже свершились открытия и находки: от дизайна будущих залов «Музея АЗ» (проектирование и строительство которого продолжается) до только что обретенных произведений, которые неизвестны даже специалистам. Зрители в полной мере ощутят масштабность замыслов и (что важнее) масштаб художника, который сегодня становится как никогда актуальным.

Отдельный – насыщенный визуально и содержательно -  зал будет посвящен результатам издательской работы «Музея АЗ». Речь идет об уникальных книгах и альбомах с ранее неизвестными произведениями художника, которые только что увидели свет. Это и хранившиеся в архивах рисунки к классике (Гоголю, Андерсену, Апулею), и публикация автопортретов Зверева, соравных по силе лучшим автопортретам Рембрандта или Ван Гога, и научные исследования, проливающие новый свет на биографию художника. 

Значение и ценность наследия Анатолия Зверева раскроет мультимедийная инсталляция, которая объединит все манежное пространство. Она призвана погрузить в мир художника, захватить, казалось, ко всему привыкшего зрителя XXI века, провести его через многообразие жанров и форм творчества одного из гениев русского искусства. Для многих эта экспозиция станет шоком – такого Зверева (совершенно не хрестоматийного, анти-салонного, в высшей степени авангардного) вы еще не видели. 

 Посетителей выставки ждет настоящая арт-сенсация - событие, которое станет знаковым для всей российской культуры XXIвека. Экспозицию составят произведения Анатолия Зверева из собрания великого коллекционера Георгия Костаки. Сенсационность в том, что все эти ценнейшие и уникальные вещи (более шести сотен работ в различных жанрах и техниках), большинство из которых неизвестны широкой публике, подарены Музею АЗ дочерью Георгия Дионисовича  Алики Костаки. Она с радостью возвращает на родину «эталонного» Зверева,  чтобы поддержать музей художника.

In the summer of 2012, “Zverev on Fire” exhibition took place in the Novy Manezh Exhibition Hall. The authors of this project, gallery owner Polina Lobachevskaya and collector Natalia Opaleva, showed about 200 works by Anatoly Zverev from the collection of George Costakis, which survived the 1976 fire at his dacha in Bakovka. The paintings surrounded by the “burning” frames combined with the dramatic story of the expulsion of the great collector from Russia made an unforettable impression on the Moscow public.

In the guestbook, every second entry read:"Such a great artist needs a museum!"
It was at this exhibition that the idea of ​​creating a Zverev museum in Moscow arose and the first plans of the project began.

Картины в огненном обрамлении с драматической историей изгнания великого коллекционера из России произвела  неизгладимое впечатление на московскую публику.

"Зверев в Огне"

“He is not an easy going person, but he is easily liked. He is sixty-one years old, he has conjoined black eyebrows, a sly look, a shy but disarming smile, which photographs misinterpret ”(from an essay about Costakis by British journalist and art expert Bruce Chatwin). In the hall of the Tretyakov Gallery dedicated to George Costakis, the central place is occupied by his portrait by Otari Kandaurov. It was donated to the museum by Aliki Kostaki. In this portrait, the main Costakis features are emphasised: the proud look of a black-haired Greek, large horn-rimmed glasses, a smoking pipe and behind him - an avant-garde abstraction. A kind of futuristic icon.

Five years later, another portrait of Costakis was created, but of the exact opposite nature: artist Oleg Tselkov presented an image of a lost, unhappy man with a nail and a rope hanging over him - an obvious allusion to the hopelessness of the last months of his life before the emigration.

The appearance and character of Costakis is a constant subject of controversy and discussion. It was incredibly difficult to capture his true face. Anatoly Zverev created one of the most impressive series of images  of Costakis. Zverev's ability to instantly capture his hero’s state was in harmony with the artistry and liveliness of George himself.


A Portrait

«Человек непростой, весьма располагающий к себе. Ему шестьдесят один год, у него сросшиеся черные брови, лукавый взгляд, застенчивая, но обезоруживающая улыбка, о которой фотографии дают неверное представление» (из эссе о Костаки британского журналиста и арт-эксперта Брюса Чатвина).


В зале Третьяковской галереи, посвященном Георгию Костаки, центральное место занимает его портрет кисти Отари Кандаурова. Его подарила музею Алики Костаки. В этом портрете подчеркнуты основные  «приметы» коллекционера: гордый вид черноволосого грека, большие роговые очки, курительная трубка и за спиной - авангардная абстракция. Своего рода футуристическая икона. 
Через пять лет возник еще один портрет Костаки прямо противоположного свойства: Олег Целков представил образ потерянного, несчастного человека, над которым нависает гвоздь с веревкой  - очевидный намек на безысходность последних месяцев жизни перед эмиграцией.

Облик и характер Костаки  постоянно становились предметом споров и обсуждений. Уловить его истинное лицо было невероятно сложно. Одну из самых впечатляющих галерей образов Костаки создал Анатолий Зверев. Способность Зверева моментально схватить состояние героя оказались созвучны артистизму и живости самого Георгия Дионисовича.


Портрет

“It’s not me who is donating - it’s my father…” (from Alika Kostaki's interview concerning her gift to the AZ Museum). In 2015, the Anatoly Zverev Museum was opened in Moscow. Its founders were the financier and philanthropist Natalia Opaleva, as well as curator and gallery owner Polina Lobachevskaya. It is known that George Costakis especially appreciated Zverev and distinguished him among all the artists of the second half of the twentieth century. 

It seems that it was inevitable that the appearance of the Zverev Museum will also be associated with the name of Costakis. A kind of prelude to the founding of the AZ Museum was the Zverev on Fire Exhibition, created by curator P. Lobachevskaya in the New Manege space in Moscow in 2012 which was based on the pieces inherited by Natalia Kostaki. For the first time, Zverev's graphic works  which miraculously survived the fire at the house in Bakovka were presented for the first time in such a large-scale contemparary exhibition. The project was an incredible success - almost all entries in the guest book came to one conclusion: Moscow needs the Zverev Museum. 

While the museum was founded and the building was under construction, Aliki Kostaki, the daughter of the great collector, decided to donate for the future “Zverev's House” almost all of the artist's works that were kept by her in Greece - more than 600 works. A third of them were shown at the exhibition “Anatoly Zverev. On the Threshold of a New Museum "in 2014. When the Zverev Museum opened in a reconstructed building on Tverskaya-Yamskaya, its collection was also replenished with a collection of non-conformist artists, (unofficial artists of the 1950s-80s), which previously belonged to the Costakis family.

В 2015 году в Москве  был открыт Музей Анатолия Зверева. Его основателями стали финансист и меценат Наталия Опалева, а также куратор и галерист Полина Лобачевская.

Как известно, Георгий Костаки особенно ценил Зверева и выделял его среди всех художников второй половины ХХ века. Кажется, судьбой было предначертано, чтобы появление зверевского музея также было связано с именем Костаки.
Своего рода прелюдией к основанию Музея AZ стала выставка «Зверев в огне», созданная куратором П. Лобачевской  в Новом Манеже в 2012-м году на основе коллекции Натальи Костаки. На ней впервые в столь масштабном объеме и в современном дизайне были представлены графические листы Зверева, чудом уцелевшие в пожаре на даче в Баковке. Проект имел невероятный успех – почти все записи в книге отзывов сводились к одной строчке: Москве необходим Музей Зверева.


После того, как музей был основан и велось строительство здания,  Алики Костаки, дочь великого коллекционера, решила безвозмездно передать для будущего «дома Зверева» почти все работы художника, которые хранились у нее в Афинах – более 600 произведений. Треть из них была показана на выставке «Анатолий Зверев. На пороге нового музея» в 2014 году.
Когда Музей Зверева открылся в реконструированном доме на Тверской-Ямской, его коллекция пополнилась также собранием нонконформистов (неофициальных художников 1950-80-х годов), ранее  принадлежавшем семье Костаки. 

Музей AZ

Aliki Kostaki, daughter of Georgy Dionisovich, is a former gallery owner, keeper of Costakis’ archives who graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University. The artist Anatoly Zverev captured her in a series of outstanding portraits and, according to the family legend, even asked for her hand in marriage (although he immediately received a polite refusal from George).

It was Aliki who continued her father's work - she became the keeper of that part of the avant-garde collection that the family took into exile. She was directly involved in the creation of foreign exhibitions, in the study and publication of archival materials and art works. For three years in Athens, Aliki was the director of the Segodnya Gallery, which represented Russian non-conformists in the West. Thus, the Costakis collection was replenished with works by artists created already in the 1970ies and 1980ies. Aliki Kostaki is associated with two major events in the fate of his father's collection. In 1997, she arranged the sale to the Greek state the part of the avant-garde works that were kept in the family (now in the Museum of Modern Art in Thessaloniki-MOMus). In 2013, she donated to the AZ Museum in Moscow a unique collection of works by Anatoly Zverev, covering the early period of his work (over 600 pieces).

Алики (для близких – Лиля) Костаки, дочь Георгия Дионисовича, -  окончила МГУ им. Ломоносова, филологический факультет. Художник Анатолий Зверев запечатлел ее в серии выдающихся портретов и, если верить семейному преданию, даже просил ее руки (правда, сразу получил от ГК мягкий отказ).

Именно Алики продолжила дело отца – она стала хранителем той части авангардной коллекции, которую семья увезла с собой в эмиграцию. Она принимала непосредственное участие в создании зарубежных выставок, в изучении и публикации архивных материалов и картин. В течение трех лет в Афинах Алики являлась директором галереи «Сегодня», которая представляла на Западе русских нонконформистов. Так, костакиевская коллекция пополнилась работами художников, созданными уже в 1970-е годы. 
С Алики Костаки связаны два важнейших события в судьбе отцовской коллекции. В 1997 году она согласилась на предложение греческого государства по приобретению той части авангардных произведений, которая попала на запад (в 2000 году она была преобретена и передана  в Музей Современного Искусства в Салониках). А в 2013 году она передала в дар Музею AZ уникальную коллекцию работ Анатолия Зверева, охватывающую ранний период его творчества (более 600 работ). 


Алики Костаки

Costakis’  first steps towards collecting were associated with the buying of antiques. Together with the staff of the embassy he worked for, he bought antiques that he found and liked in Moscow shops. It was mostly decorative silver, porcelain, carpets and paintings by Minor Dutch painters.

Later, Costakis himself treated this part of his collecting as a misunderstanding, calling that period a “period of the first mistakes”, although in the 1930s and 40s paintings by Dutch artists of the 17th century were considered the best art investment. Since the times of Peter the Great, paintings by Rembrandt and his associates have fully agreed with the "Russian taste". The purchases of paintings by Nicholas Berchem (landscapes) or Willem Kalf (still lives) were for Costakis a kind of symbolic gesture of familiarising himself with high art. 

At some point, he lost interest in the old masters - they all, in his words, "merged into one picture." The collector's logic was as follows: “If you continue to collect old canvases, you will not achieve anything. Even if one day you come across a Rembrandt, people will say  you were lucky, that's all. " Parting with the Minor Dutch took place when a new passion flared up - the paintings of the avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century.

Antiques and Minor Dutch Painters

Первые шаги  на пути коллекционирования у Георгия Костаки были связаны с покупкой антиквариата.  Вместе с сотрудниками посольства, где он работал, Костаки скупал в московских лавках понравившиеся ему предметы старины. Это было декоративное серебро, фарфор, ковры и… картины малых голландцев. 


Позднее к такому набору вещей сам Георгий Дионисович относился как к недоразумению, называл их «первыми ошибками». Между тем, картины голландских художников XVII  века в 1930-40-е годы  считались лучшей арт-инвестицией.  С петровских времен живопись Рембрандта и его соратников в полной мере отвечала «русскому вкусу». Покупка картин Николаса Берхема (пейзажи) или Виллема Кальфа (натюрморты) была для Костаки своего рода символическим жестом приобщения к высокому искусству. 

В определенный момент Костаки потерял интерес к старым мастерам – все они, по его выражению, «слились в одну  картину». Логика коллекционера была такова: «Если продолжать собирать старые полотна, так ничего и не добьешься. Даже если в один прекрасный день тебе попадется Рембрандт, люди скажут, ему повезло, вот и все». Расставание с малыми голландцами происходило тогда, когда вспыхнула новая страсть  - картины авангардистов начала ХХ века. 


Антиквариат или малые голландцы


Among several events that forced George Costakis to emigrate, the most dramatic ones were the loss and demise of a number of works from the collection. In the second half of the 1970ies, the value of the Costakis collection began to be understood not only in the West, but also in the USSR. However, in the eyes of Soviet functionaries, it’s existence  continued to spoil the country's image.
Costakis felt rejected  when he discovered that dozens of graphic works (including 8 works by Kandinsky) had been stolen from his apartment in 1975. The police could not (or did not want to) do anything. A year later, the situation repeated itself - once more a number of avant-garde graphic works disappeared from the storerooms. And again, a complete  inaction from the police. Literally three days later, a fire broke out at Bakovka: most of the country house burned down. Fire trucks arrived without water, the flames were extinguished with improvised means. During the fire (or before it), the icons that hung on the walls disappeared. The works of contemporary artists were lost.

It was a miracle that hundreds of Anatoly Zverev's masterly works from 1957-59 survived the fire. Much later, in 2012, curator Polina Lobachevskaya presented the burnt and salvaged works in the Zverev on Fire project, which became an artistic sensation in Moscow and the first step towards the opening of the AZ Museum.

Arson and Theft

Среди нескольких событий, подтолкнувших Георгия Костаки к эмиграции, самыми драматичными оказались пропажа и гибель целого ряда произведений из коллекции. Во второй половине 1970-х годов ценность (в том числе и материальную)  коллекции стали понимать не только на Западе, но и в СССР. Однако в глазах советских функционеров она по-прежнему портила имидж страны. 
Неприятие властей Костаки почувствовал тогда, когда обнаружил, что в его квартире в 1975 году были украдены десятки графических листов (в том числе 8 работ Кандинского). Милиция ничего не могла (или не хотела) сделать. Через год ситуация повторилась – вновь из запасников исчезла авангардная графика. И снова бездействие милиции. А буквально через три дня случился пожар в Баковке: сгорела большая часть загородного дома. Пожарные машины прибыли без воды, пламя гасили подручными средствами. Во время пожара (либо до него) пропали иконы, висевшие на стенах. 

В пожаре чудом уцелели сотни виртуозных листов Анатолия Зверева 1957-59 годов.   Много позднее, в 2012 году, куратор Полина Лобачевская представила обгоревшие и спасенные произведения в проекте «Зверев в огне», который стал художественной сенсацией в Москве и первым шагом к открытию Музея AZ.       

Пожар и кражи

George Costakis, as no one else, understood the complexity and contradictions of characters of some of the great artists. One of the cases when Costakis faced such a contradiction was with Marc Chagall. The stumbling block was a double-sided canvas with a portrait of Bella (Chagall's wife) on one side, and a street scene on the other.

When the owners of this work offered it to Costakis, the collector had doubts about the authorship of the painting (could one of Chagall's followers have painted it?). Meanwhile, Marc Chagall himself, at a personal meeting with Costakis in Paris, confirmed the authenticity of the canvas and advised him to buy it. Once the painting ended up in Costakis collection, it went to Chagall's large-scale exhibition in Hamburg in 1959. But there it was rejected by one of  the curators (the curator being Chagall’s son in law) as an “unconfirmed". Several times after that Marc Chagall admitted this work to be his, then again refused the authorship. For George Costakis, this story was very painful - he preferred to trust  the artists.
In the end, the collector gave the "unconfirmed Chagall" to his daughter Aliki. She, in turn, gave the painting a new life: she offered it for an exhibition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of George Costakis  at the Tretyakov Gallery in 2014 where it underwent a detailed examination: the work’s analysis confirmed the date of its creation, the authorship still remains unconfirmed.


Bella

Георгий Костаки как никто другой понимал сложность и противоречивость великих художников. В этом ему пришлось убедиться при общении с Марком Шагалом. Камнем преткновение оказался двусторонний холст с портретом Беллы (жены Шагала) на одной стороне, и с изображением уличной сценки, на другой. 

Когда владельцы этой работы предложили Костаки ее приобрести, у коллекционера были сомнения в авторстве картины (не мог ли ее написать один из шагаловских последователей?). Между тем, сам Марк Шагал при личной встрече с Костаки в Париже подтвердил подлинность холста и посоветовал его купить. Когда картина оказалась в  собрании Костаки, она отправилась на масштабную выставку Шагала в Гамбурге в 1959 году. Но там была отвергнута куратором Францем Мейером как «нешагаловская». Несколько раз Марк Шагал то принимал эту работу за свою, то снова отказывался от авторства. Для Георгия Костаки это событие стало большой болью – он привык доверять художникам. 
В конце концов, коллекционер отдал «неподтвержденного Шагала» дочери Алики. Она, в свою очередь, подарила картине новую жизнь: предложила ее на выставку к 100-летию Георгия Костаки в Третьяковской галерее (2014 год) и дала возможность провести детальную экспертизу.

Collecting Avant-Garde

“The Russian Avant-Garde of  the 20th century may seem like a strange deviation from the mainstream and even a historical nonsense. However, it is facing the future. A small group of artists  along with writers, composers and architects showed the whole of Russia the path to light. George Costakis, who understood this message, made the avant-garde announce itself to the whole world. " (from the book by Peter Roberts "George Costakis: Russian Life in Art". 1994). 

As the whole world realised the importance of the Russian Avant-Garde, the scale of George Costakis personality, his mission and his heroic accomplishment also become obvious. The XXI century pays tribute to the great collector step by step. Here are just some of the milestones:
In 2000, an exhibition opened at the Museum of Modern Art in Thessaloniki, affirming the world significance of the Costakis collection, In 2013, the 100th anniversary of George. Costakis was celebrated - with a large-scale project at the Tretyakov Gallery. In  2019, the Tretyakov Gallery opened a hall dedicated to Costakis, with the main works from his collection. In 2020, the AZ Museum presented the interactive project “Costakis’ Choice”.

Costakis in the 21st Century

«Русский авангард  в ХХ веке может показаться странным отклонением от магистрального пути и даже историческим нонсенсом. Однако, он весь обращен в будущее. Небольшая группа художников в союзе с писателями, композиторами, архитекторами указала всей России путь к свету. По мере того, как весь мир осознает актуальность русского авангарда, становится также очевиден масштаб личности Георгия Костаки, его миссии и подвига. ХХI век шаг за шагом отдает должное великому коллекционеру. Вот лишь некоторые вехи:
В 2000 году отрывается экспозиция в Музее современного искусства в Салониках, утверждающая мировое значение коллекции Костаки.
В 2013 году отмечается 100-летие Георгия Костаки – к нему приурочен масштабный проект Третьяковской галереи «Костаки: Выезд из СССР Разрешить».
В 2019 году в Третьяковской галерее открывается зал, посвящённый Костаки, с главными произведениями из его коллекции  
В 2020 году Музей AZ представляет интерактивный проект «Выбор Костаки».


Костаки в ХХI веке

Life among art and friendship with many artists naturally led to the fact that George Costakis himself took up a brush and paints. He sometimes accompanied Anatoly Zverev to his plein airs and often made fluent graphic sketches.
Painting in the full sense of the word Costakis only took up when already in exile. The first paintings appeared in Rome, where the family moved from Moscow in 1977: the images of Roman pines at the Pineta Sachetti park became a kind of art therapy during a difficult parting with the homeland. After moving to Greece, Greek landscapes appeared, as well as nostalgic Russian motives.

 In addition to landscapes, there were also canvases full of happy or bitter memories (Russia, Easter, GULAG. Kotlas). A number of paintings with geometric motifs represented a kind of visual reflections on the fate of the Russian avant-garde ("Avant-garde Cemetery", "Malevich's Grave").

Costakis the Painter

Жизнь среди искусства и дружба с художниками естественным образом привели к тому, что и сам Георгий Костаки взял в руки кисть и краски. Он неоднократно отправлялся на живописные пленэры с Анатолием Зверевым и сам делал беглые графические зарисовки.
Живописанием в полном смысле слова Костаки занялся уже в  эмиграции. Первые картины появились в Риме, куда семья переехала из Москвы в 1978-м: изображение римских сосен в парке Пинета (Pineta) стало своего рода арт-терапией в трудном расставании с родиной. После переезда в Грецию появились греческие пейзажи, а затем и ностальгические русские мотивы. 

Помимо пейзажей возникали также холсты, полные счастливых или горьких воспоминаний («Россия. Пасха», «ГУЛАГ. Котлас»). Ряд картин с геометрическими мотивами представлял своего рода визуальные размышления о судьбе русского авангарда («Кладбище авангарда», «Могила Малевича»). 
Георгий Костаки вполне трезво относился к своему хобби и, конечно, не предполагал строить карьеру художника. Между тем, в 1985 году состоялась его персональная выставка в Афинах.

“My paintings were like my own children for me ... On the eve of parting, I painfully thought that everything that I will leave behind is a part of me and I will forever feel this parting pain, similar to that of a  bleeding wound." (from the memoirs of George Costakis).
In 1977, having made a decision to move abroad with his family, Сostakis turned to the Ministry of Culture with a proposal to donate 80 percent of the collection to the State Tretyakov Gallery with the condition that 20 percent will be allowed to exit the country . The issue was resolved positively. Contrary to Costaki's darkest premonitions, this transfer of works as a gift to the Tretyakov Gallery went smoothly. Moreover, George Costakis insisted that the best things remain in Russia.


In the spring of 1977, the museum’s commission worked in the Costakis’ apartment on prospekt Vernadskogo almost every day. The first act of transfer was made on March 21, the last - on August 24. As a result, the collector donated 144 paintings and 656 graphic works to the state.
Costakis has repeatedly stressed that he literally had to struggle in order for some important works to be left in Russia. For example, the commission rejected almost all of Rodchenko's paintings (for them he was only a photographer), the same fate befell the works of Lyubov Popova, Ivan Klyun and others.
After more than 800 units of the collection were donated to the Tretyakov Gallery, Costakis left the country and the remaining part of his collection was sent to Germany with the stamp “Permitted to exit the USSR …”.


Division of the Collection

«Картины, которые я собрал, были для меня что родные дети… В преддверии расставания я мучительно думал о том, что каждая вещь, которая уйдет от меня, это часть меня самого и я буду чувствовать боль, как от кровоточащей раны» (из воспоминаний Георгия Костаки).
В 1977 году, приняв решение выехать с семьей за границу, Костаки обратился в Министерство Культуры с предложением передать ГТГ 80 процентов коллекции с условием вывоза 20-и процентов. Вопрос был решен положительно.
 Вопреки самым мрачным предчувствиям Костаки, эта передача произведений в дар Третьяковской галерее прошла спокойно. Более того, Георгий Костаки настоял чтобы  в России остались лучшие вещи. 


Весной 1977 года музейная комиссия работала в квартире Костаки на проспекте Вернадского почти ежедневно. Первый акт приема был cоставлен 21 марта, последний – 24 августа. В итоге коллекционер передал государству 144 произведений живописи и 656 единиц графики.
Костаки неоднократно подчеркивал, что ему приходилось буквально навязывать важные работы. Так, например, комиссия отвергла почти все картины Родченко (для них он был только фотографом), та же участь постигла произведения Любови Поповой, Ивана Клюна и других. 
После того, как более 800 единиц собрания безвозмездно отошли Третьяковке, Костаки позволили уехать из страны и оставшуюся часть раритетов отправить в Германию с грифом «Выезд из СССР разрешить…».

“Over 2 day period, the Tretyakov Gallery was receiving one of the largest and most important gifts of art that any museum has received in the 20th century. The quality of the work was impeccable. In terms of quantity, this collection was significantly ahead of the famous collections of Gertrude and Leo Stein or Peggy Guggenheim. In 2000, the Greek Government bought 1,277 avant-garde works from the Costakis family (at well below market prices) and donated them to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki (MOMus).
In 2013, Aliki Kostaki, daughter of Georgy Dionisovich, donated to the AZ Museum in Moscow  more than 600 works by Anatoly Zverev, as well as numerous archives from the collection of  her father, George Costakis.

In 1966 George Costakis donated a painting by Kees van Dongen, called "Spanish Woman", 1911 to The Pushkin State Museum.

At the end of a brilliant tour of exhibitions in the USA, Canada and Europe, George Сostakis presented the work of Lyubov Popova "Birsk" in gratitude for the uncountable work done by the Guggenheim Museum.

«За какие-то пару дней Третьяковская Галерея получила один из самых больших и важных даров, которых неодинмузей  мира не получал в  течении ХХ века Качество работ было безупречным. По количеству же  эта коллекция значительно опережала прославленные собрания Гертруды и Лео Стайн или Пегги Гуггенхайм». Хроника дарений и передач
В 1977 году  Государственной Третьяковской галерее  подарено 834  произведения изобразительного искусства -  142  живописные работы и 692 графических листа;
Музею  древнерусской  культуры и искусства им. А. Рублева - 51 экспонат, среди которых иконы, церковное шитье, фрагменты фресок;  
Министерству Культуры СССР (позднее переданных Музею-заповеднику  Царицыно) — 230 образцов русской игрушки из глины, дерева, кости, папье-маше и  других материалов.
В 1983 году после авангардной выставки в Швеции Георгий Костаки подарил картину К. Малевича «Портрет дочери. Уна» музею современного искусства  Стокгольма в благодарность шведскому государству за лечение.

 В 2000 году Правительство Греции покупает у семьи Костаки (за цену значительно ниже рыночной) 1277 авангардных работ и передает в Музей современного искусства города Салоники. 
В 2013 году Алики Костаки, дочь Георгия Дионисовича, дарит   Музею AZ более 600 работ и архивных документов Анатолия Зверева  из коллекции Георгия Костаки.

В 1966 году Георгий Костаки подарил  Пушкинскому Музею картину Кеса ван Донгена «Испанка», 1911 год.

По окончании блистательного тура выставок в США, Канаде и Европе Георгий Костаки подарил работу Любови Поповой "Бирск" в благодарность за неоцинимую работу проделанную музеем Гуггенхайм.

Дары

In the mid-1970s, George Costakis, in his own words, felt that “living in Moscow had become uncomfortable”. He was constantly monitored, threats were received, and thefts of works from the collection began. Costakis seriously feared for his life and that of his loved ones. In addition, in 1976, his service at the Canadian Embassy ended, and with it the diplomatic immunity. By then, the collector finally decided to leave the USSR.

The main stumbling block was the fate of the collection. Attempts to hand it over to create a museum were unsuccessful. At the same time, Soviet laws prohibited the “export of valuables”. Thanks to the mediation of Vladimir Semenov (the USSR representative to the UN and a collector himself interested in the the avant-garde), it was possible to agree on the export of that part of the collection which was not donated to the state.
In 1978, the Costakis family flew to Rome. Only daughter Natalya with her family remained in Moscow. After spending a year and a half in Italy waiting for a U.S residence permit George Costakis, on the advice of the Greek ambassador, decided to move to Athens and make it his new home.


Emigration

В середине 1970-х годов Георгий Костаки, по его собственным словам, почувствовал, что «жить в Москве стало неуютно». За ним постоянно велась слежка, поступали угрозы, начались кражи произведений из коллекции. Костаки всерьез опасался за жизнь свою и своих близких. К тому же в 1976 году заканчивалась его служба в посольстве Канады, а вместе с ней и дипломатический иммунитет. К этому времени коллекционер окончательно решил покинуть СССР. 

Главным камнем преткновения оказалась судьба коллекции. Попытки передать ее для создания музея не увенчались успехом. В то же самое время  советские законы запрещали «вывоз ценностей». Благодаря посредничеству Владимира Семенова (представителя СССР при ООН и увеченного авангардом коллекционера) удалось договориться о вывозе той части вещей, которые не были переданы государству.
В 1978 году семья Костаки вылетела в Рим. В Москве осталась только дочь Наталья со своей семьей. Проведя в Италии полтора года в ожидании вида на жительство в США, Георгий Костаки по совету греческого посла,  решил переехать на постоянное проживание в Афины. 

Эмиграция

Happiness and prosperity for George Costakis were inseparable from the ideal of a large and affectionate family. Having his parents as an example, he realised that only when one can rely on his family, will he be  able to endure all the sorrows and hardships that life might put before him.

In search of a better life, his father Dionisios Costakis, traveled to Egypt, Central Asia and, finally, founded a home in Moscow along with his wife Elena, who had an aristocratic upbringing and spoke several languages.They had five children: in 1901 a daughter Marika, two years later the eldest son, who was named Spiridon in honour of his grandfather (Spiridon was killed in 1930, while driving his Harley Davidson motorbike during a competition. Dionisios was never able to come to terms with this loss and died of a heart attack in 1932). Then, five years later, Nikolai was born, another five years later - George and, finally, in 1918 - the youngest of the brothers, Dmitry. In 1917-1918, the family's tobacco trade business was destroyed by the revolution; the brothers had to start working early to support the family.


In his life, George Costakis essentially followed the family lifestyle of his parents: his four children - three daughters (Inna, Aliki and Natalya) and his son Alexander - grew up in an atmosphere of love, with respect for elders, and always surrounded by art, which was valued above any other things.

Everyone who was visiting Costakis’ home recalls the amazing openness of this family, the hospitality of the owners (there were legends about the feasts), their constant readiness to help and listen. The main family savings turned out to be the collection - thanks to it, it was possible to survive the most desperate moments associated with forced emigration.

Счастье и благополучие для Георгия Костаки были неотделимы от идеала большой и дружной семьи. На примере своих родителей он видел, что только в опоре на семью человек способен перенести все горести и невзгоды. 

Его отец – Дионисий Спиридонович – в поисках лучшей доли побывал в Египте, Средней Азии и, наконец, нашел вторую родину в Москве в супружестве с Еленой Эммануиловной Папахристодуло, которая имела аристократическое воспитание и владела несколькими языками. У них родились пятеро детей: в 1901 году  - дочь Марика, спустя два года на свет появился старший сын, которого в честь деда нарекли Спиридоном. Затем через пять лет родился Николай, ещё через пять – Георгий Костаки и, наконец, в 1918 году - младший из братьев, Дмитрий. В 1917-1918 годах семейный бизнес, связанный с розничной торговлей табаком, был уничтожен революцией; братьям пришлось рано начать работать, чтобы поддержать родителей. 


В своей жизни Георгий Костаки во многом следовал семейному укладу родителей: его четверо детей  - три дочери (Инна, Алики и Наталья) и сын Александр – росли в любви, в почитании старших, в окружении искусства, которое ценилось выше любых других вещей. 

Все, кто бывал в гостях у  Костаки, вспоминают удивительную открытость этой семьи, хлебосольность хозяев (о костакиевских застольях ходили легенды), их постоянную готовность прийти на помощь. Главным семейным сбережением оказалась коллекция Георгия Дионисовича  - благодаря ей удавалось пережить самые отчаянные моменты, связанные с вынужденной эмиграцией.

Liubov Popova also participated with a great number of works at the “0,10, Last Futurist Exhibition of Paintings” including her painting titled Travelling Woman, the most “expensive” painting in this exhibition, according to the sale prices written by hand on a copy of the catalogue by Ivan Puni. Researchers studying Popova’s work are familiar with the confusion surrounding the identity of her work titled Travelling Woman, which was artwork no. 92 in the “0,10” exhibition catalogue and was later also presented in Moscow at the Store exhibition (1916) and at the 5th State Exhibition (1918-19). The Costakis collection at MOMus, Thessaloniki includes the well-known large painting (oil on canvas, 158.5 Χ 123 cm) under the above title, which is also the title of the painting in the Norton Simon Museum’s collection in Los Angeles (known as Traveller and also deriving from the Costakis collection). 
The distinguished scholar of the Russian avant-garde Anatoli Strigalev claimed that the work that was presented at the 0,10 exhibition under the title Travelling Woman was the painting in the Norton Simon Museum’s collection, since it depicts – with greater clarity – a female figure sitting in a train compartment holding an umbrella. Anatoli Strigalev had proposed a new title for the artwork in the Costakis collection in Thessaloniki, namely Travelling Man, because there are elements in the painting pointing to a male and not female figure (e.g. tail coat, hat). (See Anatolii Strigalev, Proidemsia po vystavke 0,10 at «Russkii avangard. Problemy reprezentatsii i interpretatsii”, published by the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg 2001, pp. 88-89).  However, there are elements of a female figure in this painting as well, such as the asymmetric oval contour that is repeated horizontally as a white volume in the left central section of the painting. The work entitled Traveling Woman from the Costakis collection at MOMus in Thessaloniki is of great interest because one can see that it is a completely synthetic work that encompasses details, elements and experimental forms of all other Popova's works of her final cubofuturistic period. On the back of the canvas it is written in marker, which means that it could not be written before 1950, the Russian title 'Puteshesvennitsa' (Travelling Woman). All assumptions aside, there is an interesting element that provides a final solution to the issue of the two Travelling Women. In the catalogue of Popova’s posthumous exhibition, which was held in Moscow in 1924, the painting is presented under the title Travelling Woman (version 2). In the photographs of that exhibition salvaged by Costakis, one clearly sees the artwork that is today part of the Norton Simon collection hanging on the wall. Therefore we can assume that the painting in the Norton Simon collection is ‘version Νο 2’ of the Travelling Woman, while the SMCA’s painting of the same name is version Νο 1.

The Costakis Collection of МОМus-Museum of Modern Art includes a small Black Quadrilateral. When the painting was analyzed by art conservation specialist Maria Kokkori, the x-ray revealed traces of an earlier painting below it. It was part of a lost painting, one of the sketches for which is known with the title War (1914) and depicts a horse with the words “Berlin”, “War”, “Teeth”, “Fallacy”, “Painting” and “Simulation" (Khardzhiev collection, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam). According to Kokkori, there was almost no dust to be found between the two colored layers, which means that Malevich painted this certain suprematist work right after he had completed the earlier painting, making the Black Quadrilateral one of the earliest works of suprematist painting and leading us safely to date it from 1915.

From 1919 to 1921 Gustav Klucis was working on the idea of the painted representation of a planet floating through space, a planet on which the rules of atmospheric gravity are observed while the various minimalist planes intersecting the sphere seek to convey messages relating to the possibilities of new technological advances. The central painting, of particular interest in terms of the use of materials which transform the texture, is titled “Dynamic City”. Klucis also presented the painting under the title “Plan for the City of the Future”, and described his artistic method as “axonometric painting”. The work also reflects the fascination felt by many of the Russian avant-garde artists for theories of cosmic, astronomical phenomena, and their interest in the future conquest of space, the study of the universe and the habitation of planets. Klucis continued working for several years on this motif of the “Dynamic City” and made a series of photomontage images, which capture a futuristic representation of a modern city with facades of skyscrapers and obtain a selectively representational character with elements of human figures and walls of buildings projected from all points and thus creating a sense of gravity, as it happens on a planet.

The tendency towards the representation of what cannot be represented realistically, such as, for example, a dream, a vision or a wish, was the theme for a series of works of the artists of Russian Avant-garde, that expressed human turmoil while confronting the Universe. Such works often reflected in different ways the thinking of theosophists or the dreamy state of symbolists. A celestial challenge of this kind is depicted in Solomon Nikritin's painting entitled “Man and Cloud” (1930), in which the cloud hovers like a lifeline above a tiny figure standing alone on an islet in the middle of nowhere. Amongst the gray, empty and lifeless environment, the colored cloud, in which small stories are revealed, expresses everything that could be a pleasant memory of life and, moreover, every visionary expectation for the upcoming world.

In the early 1920s, Ivan Kliun painted a series of works that he named "Cosmic Images". One of these "images" is the painterly composition "Red light, spherical construction". The painting reflects the attraction of many artists of the Russian Avant-garde for theories on astronomical phenomena, their interest in the future conquest of space and the understanding of the nature of the universe. The light, here, originates from a central source of energy and spreads circularly and intensely on the canvas. The painter uses black oil paints and successive layers of red color and manages to approach his initial purpose, which is to create a kind of self-illuminated painting. Red indicates the color of the revolution, but primarily it signifies the driving force of life.


Five Basic Works from Costakis Collection

In the late 1950ies, George Costakis acquired a unique collection of folk toys from the heirs of the actor and collector Nikolai Tsereteli (d. 1942). Russian toys, along with the  icons, were in Costakis’ eyes a true source of avant-garde forms. By the 1970s, his collection numbered almost two and a half hundred wonderful examples of folk art made of clay, wood, papier-mâché, bone and other materials. There were toys originating from the main areas of this craft of the 19th - early 20th centuries (Moscow region, Nizhny Novgorod province and the Russian North). In other words, Costakis owned a collection of toys that could constitute a separate, outstanding museum.

Leaving the country, George Costakis left almost the entire collection as a gift to the state: for a long time it was kept in the warehouses of the USSR Ministry of Culture and only in 1992 it was transferred to the Tsaritsyno Museum.
In 1933, Nikolai Tsereteli, based on his acquisitions, published a book: "Russian Folk Toy", where he argued that a toy is not a trifle, but a kind of a cultural code of a nation. He prophesied a long, happy life for his collection for the sake of the future generations  that will  create new forms and meanings. Nikolai Tsereteli died in poverty and obscurity,  but George Costakis manged to saved his life's work.

В конце 1950-х годов Георгий Костаки приобрел уникальное собрание народных игрушек у наследников актера и коллекционера Николая Церетели (ум. 1942). Русская игрушка наряду с иконой являлась в глазах Костаки подлинным источником авангардных форм. Эта коллекция насчитывала почти две с половиной сотни замечательных образцов народного творчества из глины, дерева, папье-маше, кости и других материалов. Здесь были игрушки, созданные мастерами главных центров этого промысла XIX – начала ХХ веков (Подмосковья, Нижегородской губернии и Русского Севера). Иными словами, Костаки владел собранием, которое могло бы составить отдельный, выдающийся музей. 


Уезжая из страны, Георгий Костаки оставил в дар государству всю коллекцию: долгое время она хранилась без движения в министерстве культуры СССР и лишь в 1992 году была передана в Музей-заповедник «Царицыно».
В 1933 году Николай Церетели, опираясь на свои приобретения, опубликовал книгу «Русская народная игрушка», где доказывал, что игрушка – не безделица, а своего рода культурный код нации. Он пророчил ей долгую, счастливую жизнь в памяти следующих поколений (для создания новых форм и смыслов). Николай Церетели умер в нищете и безвестности и только Георгий Костаки спас дело всей его жизни.

“Then, there were toasts for everyone there and far. Uncle Zhora beamed with pleasure. Toward the end of the feast, he took out his guitar and sang a wonderful old romance with his wife. Everyone sang along and clapped their hands ”(from the memoirs of Valentin Vorobyov).


Almost everyone who has been to Costakis apartment and stayed up late at the hospitable table will definitely remember the guitar and romances. The owner of the house lovingly accompanied his wife Zinaida, who by nature had a wonderful mezzo-soprano. It was with the guitar that George Costakis was captured in numerous photographs. In each of his hobbies, he strove for perfection. So it was with the guitar as well - in the late 1930ies, he took guitar lessons from a famous musician and teacher Alexander Ivanov-Kramskoy. The Collection also contained several paintings depicting a guitar (one of the favorite images among European modernists): the most famous is “Guitar” by Nadezhda Udaltsova (1914).

«Потом пошли тосты за всех сидящих и путешествующих. Дядя Жора сиял от удовольствия. Под конец пиршества он взял гитару и спел на пару с женой замечательный старинный романс. Все подпевали и хлопали в ладоши» (из воспоминаний Валентина Воробьева).

Почти все, кто бывал в квартире Костаки и допоздна засиживался за хлебосольным столом, обязательно вспоминают о гитаре и романсах. Хозяин дома самозабвенно аккомпанировал жене Зинаиде, у которой от природы было замечательное меццо-сопрано. Именно с гитарой Георгий Костаки запечатлен на многочисленных фотографиях. 
В каждом из своих увлечений Костаки стремился к совершенству. Так и с гитарой – в конце 1930-х годов он брал уроки игры на этом инструменте у знаменитого музыканта и педагога Александра Иванова-Крамского. В его коллекции также было несколько картин с изображением гитары (один из любимых образов у европейских модернистов): самая известная – «Гитара. Фуга» Надежды Удальцовой (1914 год).

"How I loved the old Bakovka, the ancestral home of the Costakis family - this house with its warm burning stove, with its gramophone and with a large table in the living room, at which, at times the family, nearly thirty of us sat down." (from the memoirs of Mikhail Costakis).

According to George Costakis, the house in the village of Bakovka (Odintsovo district), was bought by his father in the mid-1920s after several attempts to settle in the Moscow region (before that there was a house in Nemchinovka). After the death of  Dionisy Spiridonovich, the main rooms of the house were occupied by Elena Emmanuilovna, the mother of the collector who ran the household. George Costakis wrote: “my mother lived in Bakovka,  with my younger brother Mitya and his family, she died being 98, nearly a century old.”

All members of the Costakis family recall the days spent in Bakovka with incredible warmth. This house also became an artistic Mecca, where Anatoly Zverev and other artists created hundreds of graphic works, where musicians and scientists came to visit, where rare icons and paintings of non-conformists hung on the walls. That is why the fire in Bakovka, which happened in 1976 and destroyed half of the house (Costakis was adamant that the arson was organised by the special services), became a real tragedy for Georgy Dionisovich and a reason for emigration.

«Как же я любил старую Баковку, родовое гнездо семьи Костаки - этот дом с его жарко натопленной печкой, с его патефоном и с большим столом в гостиной, за которым усаживалось, порой, человек до тридцати». (из воспоминаний Михаила Костаки).

Дом в поселке Баковка (Одинцовский район), по свидетельству Георгия Костаки, был куплен его отцом в середине 1920-х после нескольких попыток осесть в Подмосковье (до этого был дом в Немчиновке). После смерти отца Дионисия Спиридоновича главные комнаты дома занимала Елена Эммануиловна, мама коллекционера, которая вела хозяйство. Георгий Костаки пишет: «Мать жила в Баковке с младшим братом Митей и его семьей, не дотянув двух лет до столетия».


Все члены семейства Костаки с невероятной теплотой вспоминают дни, проведенные в Баковке. Этот дом стал еще и артистической Меккой, где Анатолий Зверев и другие художники создавал сотни графических листов, куда приезжали музыканты и ученые, где на стенах висели редкие иконы и картины нонконформистов. Именно поэтому пожар в Баковке, случившийся в 1976 году и уничтоживший половину дома (Костаки утверждал, что это был поджог спецслужб), стал для Георгия Дионисовича настоящей трагедией и поводом для эмиграции.

“I managed to collect a large collection of icons: I had approximately hundred and fifty wooden boards painted between 15th and 17th century” (from the memoirs of George Costakis).

Even if Costakis had not left Russia an invaluable  collection of avant-garde paintings, the donation of more than fifty icons to the Andrei Rublev Museum alone in 1977 would have inscribed his name in the annals of outstanding benefactors.
According to George himself, his interest in collecting icons began after the war, that is, after he became interested in the avant-garde. Costakis immediately noticed the extensive connection between ancient Russian painting and abstract works of the early twentieth century. 

Guided only by his own taste, he acquired the rarest examples of monumental paintings (fragments of Novgorod frescoes of the 12th century), embroideries (the shroud of the 17th century “Entombment"), as well as icons of almost all old Russian schools (Moscow, Tver, Novgorod, Rostov, Yaroslavl, The Stroganov script).

 Many datings and stylistic features of his icons are still being clarified, but their highest historical and cultural significance is beyond any doubt. Thus, "Our Lady of Tenderness" of the 16th century (the era of Ivan the Terrible) is considered to be  one of the most important monuments of Rostov school of painting.

Даже если бы Костаки не оставил стране бесценные картины авангарда, одна только безвозмездная передача более полусотни икон в Музей имени Андрея Рублева в 1977 году вписала бы его имя в анналы выдающихся дарителей.
По словам коллекционера, собирание икон началось после войны, то есть после того, как он увлекся авангардном. Костаки сразу заметил глубинные связи между древнерусской живописью и абстрактными работами первой четверти  ХХ века. 


Руководствуясь лишь собственным вкусом, Костаки приобрел редчайшие образцы монументальной живописи (фрагменты новгородских фресок  XII века), шитья (плащаница с «Положением во гроб»  XVII в.),  а также иконы почти всех древнерусских школ (Москва, Тверь, Новгород, Ростов, Ярославль, Строгановское Письмо).  

Многие датировки и стилистические особенности икон коллекции уточняются поныне, но их высокое качество не вызывает сомнений. Так, «Богоматерь Умиления» XVI века (эпохи Ивана Грозного) считается одним из важнейших памятников ростовской живописи.

“I was sent  into this world by God in order to collect this art for the Russian people” (from the last interview of George Costakis). By the 1970s, George Costakis was constantly thinking about the fate of his collection. In 1973, he turned to the Ministry of Culture and personally to its minister Ekaterina Furtseva with a proposal to create a museum of contemporary art - in this case, Costakis was ready to donate the entire collection to the state. He repeatedly voiced his decision in an interview during a foreign lecture tour in the fall of 1973.
At the end of 1975, he was invited to the Ministry of Culture to clarify his intentions. He once again confirmed his wish to donate the entire collection to the country, but insisted on guarantees: his collection should never be sold (partially or jointly),  the collection should be on exhibited on permanent basis and a full scale catalogue would have to be published.

These conversations and letters to high authorities did not lead to any result - the museum was never created. Before Costakis’ departure to the West, the collection was divided. Until his death, the collector did not lose hope that the works he collected would be fully presented in Russia - if a new museum that would be created in Moscow (the letters mentioned the name of the Museum of the Avant-garde), he was ready to give away the “western” part of the collection.
According to collector’s biographer Peter Roberts, the main concern and disappointment of George Costakis in his latter years were associated with the missed opportunity to create a museum and a potential dismemberment of the collection.

К 1970-м годам Георгий Костаки задумался о судьбе своей коллекции. В 1973 году он обратился в министерство культуры и лично к Екатерине Фурцевой с предложением создать музей саванггарда  - в этом случае Костаки был готов передать государству всю коллекцию безвозмездно. Свое  решение он неоднократно озвучивал в интервью во время зарубежного лекционного тура осенью 1973 года. 
В конце 1975 года Георгий Костаки был приглашен в министерство культуры для прояснения его намерений. Он еще раз подтвердил, что передаст стране всю коллекцию, но настаивал на гарантиях: его собрание не должно быть расчленено или продано, коллекцию необходимо экспонировать в музее и издать каталог. 

Эти беседы и письма в высокие инстанции ни к чему не привели – музей не был создан. Перед отъездом Костаки в эмиграцию коллекция была разделена. Вплоть до своей кончины Георгий Костаки не терял надежду, что собранные им произведения будут в полном объеме представлены в России – в случае создания нового музея в Москве (в письмах фигурировало название Музей авангарда), он готов был отдать и ту часть коллекции, которая была увезена в Грецию.      
По мнению биографа коллекционера Питера Робертса, главная боль и разочарования Георгия Костаки в последние его годы были связаны с упущенной возможностью по созданию музея.

Introduction to "Russian Avant-Garde Art: The George Costakis Collection"

A small island in the Ionian Sea, Zakynthos (also known as Zante) is the original homeland of the Costakis dynasty. According to a family legend, Dionisios, the father of George Costakis, was a tobacco merchant in Zakynthos. After moving to Moscow, via Cairo, he first opened a tobacco imports company, and later went to work at the Greek embassy.

Until his death in 1932, Dionysios Costakis maintained close ties with the Greek diaspora. In the late 1920s, he saved a lot of church utensils and liturgical vestments from Moscow churches, which were destroyed by the Bolsheviks. Some of these items were transported to Greece and are now kept in the church of St. Dionysios on the island of Zakynthos.
On the island, famous for its sandy beaches and olive groves, the Costakis clan is still revered - it appears in all guidebooks in the section of  "famous natives of the island”.

Небольшой остров в Ионическом море  Закинф (другое название – Закинтос) является исконной родиной греческой династии Костаки. По семейному преданию, Дионисий Спиридонович, отец Георгия Костаки, занимался на Закинфе деревообработкой. Перебравшись в Москву, он поначалу открыл магазин, а затем перешел на работу в посольство. 


Вплоть до своей смерти в 1932 году Дионисий Костаки сохранял контакты с греческой диаспорой. В конце 1920-х годов он спас немало церковной утвари и литургического облачения из московских храмов, которые уничтожали большевики. Часть  этих предметов была переправлена в Грецию и сейчас хранится в церкви св. Дионисия на острове Закинтос.
На острове, знаменитом песчаными пляжами и оливковыми рощами, и поныне почитается род Костаки – он значится во всех путеводителях в разделе «знаменитые уроженцы Закинфа».

Senator Edward Kennedy, the younger brother of President John F. Kennedy, made one of the strongest impressions among all the distinguished guests who visited the Costakis home museum. This visit took place in April of 1974.
According to the collector's memoirs, the day before, he and his wife had been cleaning the apartment all day (they even had to buy a new carpet) and were terribly worried. But Kennedy immediately impressed the owners with his openness, ease, and sincere interest in art. Contrary to the protocol, he stayed with Costakis for almost 4 hours and later said that it was the most luxurious reception to which he was invited not only in Russia, but also in America - the table was laden with food, the flame of candles was reflected in the frames of the icons.
